Facilitating more just therapeutic relationships.
About me:
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, Clinical Supervisor, and continuing education trainer living in Portland, Oregon. I have been working in the field since 2002 with a focus on social justice, anti-racist, and anti-oppression based perspectives. I feel super passionate about supporting associates working in community mental health and private practice. After working as an adjunct instructor, I completed my PhD in Counseling Education and Supervision at Oregon State University in 2016. My dissertation is entitled Understanding Power in the Therapeutic Relationship. I was deeply honored to be the recipient of the 2018 Leona Tyler Award from the Oregon Counseling Association which recognizes counselors who have made outstanding contributions to the profession and whose work has had statewide implications for counseling. I consider myself a community based counselor educator, choosing to work outside the academic setting. I have been involved in various advocacy and organizing efforts in the local community.
Location of self
I am a white non-binary married child-free person who grew up in Southwestern Pennsylvania (aka the rust belt) during the Reagan years. Growing up there along with my involvement in the 90’s punk /hardcore music scene shaped my values, world view, and counselor identity. Through punk rock, I learned about racism, sexism, homophobia, fascism, and other oppressive forces through zines, educational tabling at shows, and song lyrics. Despite a working class upbringing, I’m now middle class and highly educated with a PhD. I've been a professional counselor since 2002 and have sought to forge an independent career less bound by systems + institutions.
I strive to use all my privilege and knowledge to support early career counselors to build a strong foundation in ethical, relational, and justice oriented clinical work. These days, I'm thinking about the impact of the pandemic on this field and how will will meet the social, economic, and climate challenges we are facing, collectively.
